Baseball vs Alabama State (4/19/22)

Recommended Posts

Sigh. Howell strikes out. Thank goodness for Rambusch because I don't believe anyone else besides him and DiChiara could get a hit with RISP. 2-19 for the game. Rambusch has both of those hits. We've drawn 10 walks and not one of those runners have come around to score.

Howell saves a lead off extra base hit with a great running catch. Leaping on the warning track and banging into the wall!

2 ks to end the top half of the inning.

Taking out DiChiara might come back to bite us as he would be up next. Burk, Carlson, Moore coming up for Auburn.

5-5 B10th

New pitcher for Alabama State. A guy who has only pitched 2.2 innings this season. We HAVE to be able to get hits on this kid.

Burk flies out to the warning track. 1 down.

Carlson comes up with a 0-2 single! All 10 innings with a runner on base. 9 hits, 10 walks. Gotta come through here!

Moore up to bat.

Grounder to 3B and we're VERY lucky the fielder drops the ball or it would have been a double play. Luckily runners on 1st and 2nd for Peirce!

Yep, glad this night is over. WDE!

Happy to get the W but we shouldn't have had to pitch Burkhalter 3 innings and Skipper 2 innings. Not against Alabama State. Not in a midweek game. And not in a week where we have to play 5 games.

Disappointing. Recall 7 or 8 years ago when they came over here and beat us. Shot our self in the foot last night for sure and lucky to overcome it. ASU can play good baseball.

They are better than I thought they would be. Excellent record in their conference and plus four overall.  The lefty struck out a lot of batters with the back door slider. We chased it into the dirt and below the zone numerous times.  Still we beat them 4-1 if we don’t WALK IN FOUR RUNS!!!!

ASU is a pretty good team with some good pitchers on board.. They are very well coached. Midweek games are not guaranteed wins, and Butch schedules competitive teams on purpose. There is some weakness with Auburn's middle relievers, but hopefully things will stabilize once Allsup gets enough time under his belt. Burkhalter will be fine. He didn't pitch much last Saturday because Gonzalez made it thru 8 innings IIRC. He probably needed to come in for a little work.

Our middle relievers are all projects right now......inexperience, recovering from Tommy Johns,  struggling with coming in with runners on base...you name it. Allsup can usually right his own ship but last night was just not his night. Sometimes it just happens like that. Auburn is a little fatigued right now from the grind and this will be a tough week. But it's great experience for later. If he stays healthy Allsup will be another great pitcher for Auburn IMHO.
