**Official** New Auburn OL coach Herb Hand

Does anyone remember Herby Hancock or Handcock? He was a great jazz musician from what I remember. I do think CHH will help a lot with running our spread offense. Did PSU run a spread offense similar to ours? I am happy with the hire and do think he will hit the ground running with recruiting. Now that our staff is pretty much intact, recruiting will keep going strong.

I do see James Franklin in a much worse situation than we are in. Actually, I think we are on the road to a better overall team that will kick some fanny in 2016.

retrospectively (2010), and (literally) to wit:

“Gus Malzahn, the coordinator of top-ranked Auburn’s prolific offense, is not a joking kind of guy. That does not mean others will not have fun at his expense.

Herb Hand, Vanderbilt’s offensive line coach, is one former co-worker who knows the bookish Malzahn well enough to tease him. When they worked together at Tulsa, Hand would tape pictures of the cartoon boy genius Jimmy Neutron on Malzahn’s office door, even drawing in Malzahn’s glasses for effect, to poke his reputation as an offensive mastermind.

Other days, Hand, who knew Malzahn bristled when people stereotyped him as having a “gadget offense,” would print pictures of the cartoon character Inspector Gadget…

Hand said that when he coached at Tulsa with Malzahn, Coach Todd Graham would insist that Tulsa was not a no-huddle team, it was a no-huddle program.

“Our secretaries operated at a no-huddle pace,” Hand said…

One day after Hand told a joke in a meeting, Malzahn said: “I don’t really understand jokes. I don’t get them.”

Hand asked him if he didn’t get that joke, and Malzahn responded: “No, I just don’t get the whole concept of jokes. I don’t even know why people tell them. What’s the point?”

Well while Penn State's OL stats looks atrocious, the PSU writers said Hand was in a terrible position last year and shouldn't be at fault. As said earlier, this year they had to do some shuffling and move DL to OL, plus injuries. Add that with an inconsistent WR core like PSU seemed to have and you'll have a crap offense.

FWIW, O'Brien left them with little to nothing on the OL. Hand had to convert two defensive linemen in 2014 to offensive linemen just to get by. He did sign two 4-star OL in the 2015 class but obviously those guys would have been true freshmen this past season.

The OL that Hand had to work with at penn St was as bad as it gets. D2 bad. I'm not a huge sunshine guy with Gus but the Hand & McGriff hires are strong.

And if I'm Rhette I'm worried. Hand wil step in and do most of the game day planning with Gus.

I keep hearing Rhett is likely to move on. But we'll see.

TIFWIW - Most Penn Staters are happy to see him go - they were calling for his head all season.

Well, most Penn Staters still think that Joe Paterno was a good guy who got a bad deal.

I wonder would that open the door for Spivotal as QB coach?

No. It likely opens the door for a new WR coach and CDC to move to OC/QB coach.

Not saying anything about how I feel about Lashlee, but where exactly could he go at this point in the off season? There's no where up for him to go (last I checked) and name one place that would make a better lateral move than Auburn.

I guess we will have to see how Hand works out at AU. Only time will tell. Ted Roof went from AU to PSU as DC and didn't say long (for several reasons).

In addition to being a lifelong Auburn fan, I'm also a Vandy alum. I've even rooted for Vandy against Auburn on rare occasions when Vandy has had more at stake. Lemme tell you, this guy can coach. And his players love him. How often does a Vandy offensive line hold its own in the SEC? Basically, when this guy was there.

Big fan of Herbie and jazz saw him multiple times in small venues. He also played with Miles Davis

Now back to the Mr Hand

Before we get back on topic, I'll add... if you are a fan, and haven't checked out Hancock's Possibilities CD and the accompanying documentary DVD, do yourself a favor.

Ok... now back to Hand. :)

TIFWIW - Most Penn Staters are happy to see him go - they were calling for his head all season.

I see 3 assistants are gone. Sounds like maybe there's a James Franklin problem.

Umm, we had 4 assistants leave. What does that say about us?

James Franklin and Hand are dang good coaches. People don't realize what sanctions do to a program. Bill O Brien then Franklin, have done a great job holding it together but even the best of coaches can't overcome it. If he can continue success at Penn St then he is one of the best.

In 2013, Vanderbilt's offensive line blocked for 34 rushing touchdowns. In 2011-2012 , Hand's offensive lines were instrumental in Zac Stacy breaking the Vanderbilt season and career (3,143 yards) rushing records.

If Rhett moving on means better offensive production, I'm for it.

In Rhett's case, going out to be an OC on his own, even if the prestige level of the school isn't on our level, would be a good move career-wise for him. He needs to show what he can do apart from Gus.

One last thing golf. I played in my college's jazz band as the bass guitarist. I love playing bass and try to do so with my church. The type of Christian music we play is very contemporary. The lyrics are the only thing that makes it Christian music. I mean this in a good way. You could change the lyrics and would have some good light rock music. I have played in all kinds of bands since age 16, and paid for a good chunk of my college playing in bands. I have some great equipment that can rattle the walls of a house 2 miles from mine!

It would be cool if we could put together and Auburn Family band that could go on tour!
