Why Can’t Trump Just Condemn Nazis?

In marking the one-year anniversary of a white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, the president again fails to differentiate between bigots and those who oppose them.

When violence erupted during a white-nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, one year ago this weekend, President Trump was slow to respond. When he did, his response was shockingly diffident, condemning the “egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides.”

The president was faster to comment on the anniversary of the march. Saturday morning, he tweeted:

Donald J. Trump

The riots in Charlottesville a year ago resulted in senseless death and division. We must come together as a nation. I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence. Peace to ALL Americans!

.....Trump’s tweet Saturday shows that his vision of what happened hasn’t gotten any clearer with the passage of a year. He’s still unable to name Nazis, white supremacists, and white nationalists for what they are, and unable to differentiate between those groups and those that oppose them.

The condemnation of “all types of racism” is, on its face, a positive, but it can also be read as a coded reference to the idea that there is a anti-white racist movement seeking “genocide” of white people. White supremacists will certainly read it that way.

By declining to name the aggressors, Trump places the ralliers on an even footing with those who came out to oppose them. “I am not putting anybody on a moral plane,” the president said a year ago, but once again he has done just that.

Given his refusal to differentiate between the groups, his lament for social division rings false. It’s proper for there to be division between polite society and Nazis, white supremacists, and the like. Besides, the president has seldom passed up an opportunity to sow social division where it suits him. Just a day ago, he was once again railing at NFL players who have kneeled during the National Anthem to protest racial injustice, inserting himself into a feud that is not his concern in order to profit from racial tension.

......... Nazis and open white supremacists may not constitute a significant portion of the president’s base, but white voters who nurse racial resentments and anxieties are. As a result, Trump has an interest in soft-pedaling any criticism of the Nazis themselves, and of encouraging the racial resentments, concluding there’s more to be gained from doing so than there is to be by condemning white supremacists. The result is an American president who can’t bring himself to condemn Nazis as Nazis.

The skinheads (or whatever they call themselves) didn't start beating themselves and fighting among themselves. They did have a permit and it takes two to tango. All their opposition had to do was stay home and there wouldn't have been any violence.

The opposition could have acquired their own permit for the next weekend and all would have, hopefully, been peaceful if mutually disgusting. Trump is correct on this one, both sides are to blame and both are certainly motivated by racist  attitudes.

......Trump isn’t uncomfortable with dealing with controversy personally. My colleague Emily Stewart notes “he has criticized plenty of individuals and groups by name — including NFL players for peacefully protesting during the national anthem and NBA player LeBron James just in the last week alone.”

To Trump, that seems like good politics. For some reason, he believed calling out the protesters would not be. If there was one thing this polarized country could actually agree on, it was that we crushed the Nazis and it was great. Now? Who knows. Regardless, his stance on Charlottesville didn’t measurably shift his base’s attitudes toward him.

Trump has said again and again what he thinks. He’s had a year to change his mind. He hasn’t. If Trump wanted to indict the alt-right, he could. He just doesn’t want to.

Neo Nazis, BLM, they are simply flip sides of the same coin. Both are racist hate groups, as are many others, both black and white racists. To try to establish that one style of racism is better than another is insanity. Trump was correct in his remarks, there were racists on both sides.

It was white supremacists who organized to demonstrate their racist beliefs, not their opposition.

To equate organized white supremacists to all of the people who oppose them - including many religious leaders - is what is insane.

I did hear a Washington correspondent this morning. According to him the counter protesters that where looking for a fight became frustrated with the "no show" numbers by the protesters and gave the police hell.

That's a gross over-generalization.  Like I said, the "counter protestors" also include clergy and many others who aren't looking for a fight. If a bunch of white supremacists put on a demonstration in my town, I'd counter demonstrate to let them and everyone else know they don't represent my community. 

It's shameful that you and a few others are trying to draw this equivalency.  Trump is clearly pandering to racial resentment by fostering the notion there are two equivalent sides to this.  There's not.

You should be ashamed of yourself.  Will you buy into just anything Trump says?

Well, the specific dichotomy we are facing here is Nazis/White Supremacists, vs. pretty much everyone else but white supremacists.

Pointing out the inevitable outlier individuals among the opposition to argue a case of some sort of moral equivalency reveals a lack of understanding at best, or empathy with white supremacists at worst.

But again, you ignored that those flags and Nazi symbols in the pic you posted were phony and intended to stir up the clicks ...which is mostly what JP seems aimed at.

Literal white supremacists and separatists are running for office and winning on the Republican ticket. Damned if I'll defend Farrakhan and his ilk but the fact that folks like West are finding traction on the R side of the aisle is a pretty good indicator of something rotten there.
