No it's not.

The FDA and such are not the courts...DA

Wow.. you really zinged me with that one !!

NOT.

POINT BEING, that yes, the govt does have say in bad substances in our food , water, etc... and as a means of preventing such things, " some " regulation is required. But admitting that fact does not, ( or should not ) by any stretch of the imagination, grant the Imperial Federal Govt with Gestapo like powers and endless bureaucratic red tape.

But I guess you think it does, because nothing , even freedom, is more important than security.

The question was never what's legal. That's changing the argument. She railed against these sort of social programs then took advantage of them when she needed them. No one questioned her legal right to do so. She wasn't being called a criminal. She's being called a hypocrite for taking from these social programs that she thinks are so evil. And she is.

Well, since she didn't do anything ILLEGAL, it puts to rest any reasonable objection anyone could have to her making use of what was available. The Govt TOOK HER MONEY FIRST, and all she did was get a small portion of it back. Nothing remotely hypocritical about that at all.

Careful now. All that spinning will make you dizzy.

You're right. Anyone forcibly takes something from you, w/ a promise to give ( some of ) it back later on, in small increments, you're suppose to not accept it, " on principle ", huh?

It has been mentioned a couple times in the thread, yet no one arguing for the increases have responded. Not sure why?

What impact would this have on small business including mom and pop stores?

crickets

So as long as you paid taxes at some point, partaking of gov't welfare programs is ok? Learn something new about Rand's principles every day.

Enough that in your area, a person working 40 hours a week would be able to afford a decent place to live, decent food, clothing and healthcare. That may be different in some areas vs others.

No one asked her if she'd LIKE to contribute. The $ was just taken from her. As it's taken from all.

I guess if anyone got duped by Bernie Madoff, and was awarded some level of compensation to get their $ back, you'd suggest they turn it down, because ... ?

Who decides what 'decent' means ?

Govt bureaucrats ?

We can come up with something reasonable. All I know is that we can do better. A country this prosperous shouldn't have this kind of poverty among people who are working their asses off.

Actually she was asked. She didn't have to live here. She could go buy some remote island and found her own little tax-free utopia. She could move to some other country if she didn't like paying taxes to the USA. She chose to stay. Deciding to stay is understanding that you pay taxes. If you don't like what the taxes are used for, you have choices.

I suck at analogies ? YOU'RE the one who dreams up nonsense like " she was asked " . She wasn't ! NONE of us were ! That's the point !

And if she were such a hypocrite, why did she wait until the last few years of her life to sign up to get some of her money back ?

We are all "asked" in the sense that we understand taxes are part of being US citizens, we elect people who decide on taxes and we can leave if we find paying them so abhorrent. No one is forced to stay here and pay them. This is especially true of Rand because she wasn't born here, she chose to come here knowing full well that taxes and government programs were part of the deal.

She took them because she was in financial need. There is no shame in that in and of itself...unless you spend a lifetime railing against the very existence of such social safety nets. It's right up there with Jimmy Swaggart railing against porn and illicit sex while soliciting prostitutes.

I don't have a problem with that, though it may mean public transportation.

When is the last time anyone here heard of an American dying of starvation due to lack of food? If it is not happening then why do we need to double the minimum wage? To me, the purpose of a minimum wage should only be to keep people from being blatantly exploited (you know, like we do illegal immigrants).

Also, maybe people who cannot afford to raise children should save up for having them before getting pregnant. Accountability anyone?

I just heard a local story on the radio about how some fast food workers are protesting, wanting a $15 minimum wage. One lady interviewed said that she could not make ends meet and feed her 10 kids on what they are paying her.

Repeat - her 10 kids.

Why in the hell is it OUR responsibility to pay for her life choices?
